Blogger Profile – Stephen Dunham
Hi, my name is Stephen Dunham. I am the inaugural blogger and founder of InternetJobs.com. My time as a Sr. Business Analyst, Project Manager, and Entrepreneur, and development during my career has inspired me to put these experiences in writing, sharing the good and the bad on company recruiters and corporate work environments.
In my life I have chosen many different careers and professions; but none of them stuck. Instead, my Internet Jobs “career” (if you can call it that) has chosen me. Career-wise, I have by no means “arrived”, but am merely at a staging point. Along the path to here, I have stopped at many jobs. Here’s a quick list:
- Grocery store sacker and bottle racker
- Gopher for an insurance company
- Self employed gardner and lawnboy
- Gas station attendant
- Bookkeeper and handyman for a hydraulic cylinder sales business
- Gopher for a specialty gift company
- Customer service agent for Fidelity Investments
- Mainframe computer operations manager for ATT
- Owner operator of Mail Drop mailing retail store
- Founder/president of small PC building/consulting company
- Self employed tree trimming/removal services
- Self employed curb address painter
- Valet parking parker
- Waiter/server food preparer at a private party
- Party host and “life guard” for Container Store’s founder’s party at his house in the “early days”
- Self employed “professional” photographer
- Business Analyst and Project Manager for large corporations like Verizon and Honeywell and a dozen others
- Founder of web development/consulting company
- Founder of a dot-com/dot-bomb startup
- Marketing “consultant” putting up Grand Opening balloons and hanging signs in gas stations
- Small business selling and producing custom-cut metal ranch signs
- Domainer and website entrepreneur
There are probably more ventures that will come to mind later. While I appreciate my college eduction from Texas Tech University, the truth is that I received very little direct preparation for any specific job skills that I would ultimately need and use. Instead, the reverse is the case: it was my experience in various jobs and enterprises that has given me the real education that I apply in every new position.
From itty-bitty one-man operations to giant Fortune 50 companies, each endeavor has taught me something. Some of them were in pre-Internet times. But I am certain that almost every one of them could be performed or enhanced by the Internet (perhaps with the exception of grocery sacking).
You would probably not be surprised that I have received my share of battle wounds. Like many of you, I have been blamed for things I did not do, and denied credit for things I have. Some of my high-paying gigs were mind-numbingly boring, whereas some of the barely-pay-the-bills jobs were incredibly stimulating and exciting. There were years where I paid cash for 2 boats, and there were years that found me in the unemployment and food stamps line. My goal here on InternetJobs.com is to share with you all that I can to help you plan your career steps, and to roll with the punches that simply are not foreseeable. Not to see you only survive, but rather to thrive!
All the best in your Internet Jobs adventures!
