Christmas Week Job Hunting

Monday December 22, 2008

Last week is over and the new one begins – Christmas week!  I expect recruiting contacts to be very low this week and next.

As with most weekends, recruiting contacts are pretty much nil, or uninteresting at best.  However, on Saturday I received a call that actually piqued my interest.

A transportation company in Hawaii needs a “project manager” to do all sorts of marketing stuff.  The req read more like that of a product manager, but I told the recruiter I was ready to rise to the occasion.  Now it is back to the realities of the daily grind of job hunting.

  • Updating/renewing my online resumes.
  • Dealing with Internet connectivity issues; will troubleshoot my Belkin wireless router shortly.
  • After lots of headaches with Blockbuster OnDemand yesterday, I was finally able to rent a movie today.  Shortly after commencing the download, I received an email confirmation of “success”.  It appears to be downloading very slowly, but hopefully will be faster than making a trip to the video store.
  • Got a call from Gormel.  She has a position with Fannie Mac or Freddie Mae or whatever in Dallas.  Since her company is direct to the client, the rate she can offer is a good $15/hr higher than the recruiter I talked to last week.  But, as it goes in this business, she never sends me the job description she promised.  Next!

Well, like I expected, the week was pretty slow on the job hunting side, and very busy with family and Christmas activities.  Next week might be almost as slow as the week rings in the New Year.  And then I expect the first business week in January to start with a rush of contacts for contract positions amid more potential news of layoffs and bankruptcies.  It should be interesting.
